Properties Post

Properties:
  • Commutative Property
  • Associative Property
  • Inverse Property of Addition

Make a real-life example not shown in the videos you've seen for each property above. You will receive two points for each appropriate example. Make sure to include both of your names. Good luck, and be creative!

  1. Commutative property
    - Eric was bring one apple and hannah two. Then, Eric decided to bring two and hannah one. 2+1=1+2
    Associative.
    - Tom was alone. Then, A and B came. Later, A went to Tom and B was alone. Tom+(A+B)=(Tom+A)+B
    Inverse property of addition
    - Yurie came and gave Hannah a candy. Then, Yurie didn't have any candy to eat, so she just took Hannah's. 1-1=0
    Identity Property of Multiplication
    - Mr Jobe ate 4 pizzas. He wanted to eat it every other day. However, he could only eat it one time. 4x1=4
    Multiplication Property of Zero
    - Eric wanted to eat a pizza. He had no money. He couldn't eat any pizza.

  2. Commutative Property
    David and Panda are going home. David goes before Panda. And the next day Panda goes before David . But, the results are same. They both arrive and home.

    Associative Property
    Puppy, Dog and Ye Lim are going to school by car. The first day, Puppy and Dog sits in the back and Ye Lim sits at the front. Next day, Puppy sits at the front, and Dog and Ye Lim sits at the back. The results are same. They all arrive to school.

    Inverse Property of Addition
    Ye Lim draws a line on a paper. But she erases it. Eraser is the opposite of a pencil, so it becomes nothing, which is zero.

    Identity Property of Addition
    David got 500 dollars from the government yesterday. And today, he got zero amount of money. So he has 500 dollars.

    Identity Property of Multiplication
    David had 8 bags. But inside of each bag, there were only one marble. So it is 8 x 1 = 8, So David has 8 marbles.

    Multiplication Property of Zero
    Ye Lim got 5 presents. When Ye Lim opened all presents, there were nothing in it. Which is “zero”. So 5 x 0 = 0, Ye Lim has zero presents.

    Commutative Property:
    Puff Rank the monkey had a daily schedule to accomplish. Every day, he first ate breakfast, took a shower, and went to work. However, the next day, he took a shower first, and then ate breakfast, and went to work. Although he changed his order around, he still accomplished all three tasks.
    b+s+w=s+b+w

    Associative Property:
    Puff Rank the monkey had three bananas. A purple one, green one, and a yellow one. He always ate he purple one and green one together and left the yellow banana to eat later. However, today he ate the green one and the yellow one together and left out the purple one. He changed the groupings around, but he still ate all three bananas and had a happy full stomach. :)
    (p+g)+y=p+(g+y)

    Inverse Property of Addition:
    Puff Rank the monkey took a math test. Every right answer, he earned 1 point, and every wrong answer, he earned -1 point. There was a total of 10 questions, and he got 5 right, then 5 wrong. In the end, he had 0 points.
    5+(-5)=0

    Identity Property of Addition:
    Puff Rank’s school started a fundraiser. The school’s staff raised a total of $10. When the fundraiser started for the students, the total was $0. The school raised the total of $10 for the fundraiser.
    10+0=10

    Identity Property of Multiplication:
    Puff Rank had a job as a doctor. His job agreed to pay him $30 each week. However, he failed on a surgery and got fired the first week. He only earned $30 in the end.
    30*1=30

    Multiplication Property of Zero:
    Puff Rank was on a diet and planned to jump around 20 times each day. On the first day, he fell down and broke his ankle, so he couldn’t jump anymore for the rest of his life.
    20*0=0

  4. Commutative:
    At the stuffed animal club meeting, I had 23 stuffed animals. I sat to the right of a person with 1,423 stuffed animals. A the next club meeting, I sat to the left if the person with 1,423 stuffed animals. It is still the same amount of stuffed animals.

    Associative:
    At my tea party, my bears sat with my bunnies, and the snakes sat alone. At my next tea party the snakes an the bunnies sat together and the bears sat alone. In the end, there are still the same amount of stuffed animals.

    Inverse Property of Addition:
    You accidentally drink a liter of sour milk. Realizing that it tastes bad, you drink 1liter of regular milk. Then, you throw up and there is nothing left in your stomach. In this, regular milk is positive, and sour milk is negative.

    Identity Property of Addition:
    There are 3 people in my family. My parents do not want to have any more children so I still have 3 people in my family. 3+0=3

    Identity Property of Multiplication:
    I had 5 pencils and I wanted to organize them into one box. I put all the pencils together and put them in a box. I still have all 5 pencils. 5*1=5

    Multiplication Property of Zero:
    I have 123 documents in my computer. I didn’t back up my computer and I had to get it re-imaged. Therefore, all of my files were deleted and I had no documents left. In this, re-imaging is zero. 123*0=0

    Commutative Property: If you add up hydrogen with oxygen and then you add oxygen with hydrogen, you shall get water either way.

    Associative Property: Jamie and Joey have promised to group up for a project and Eric was left over. However, Jamie changed his mind and decided to group up with Eric, and now Joey was left over. Even though the group changed, two projects were created in total.

    Inverse Property of Addition: If you rob ($5,000) a bank with a partner then you leave to find a car and then your partner runs away with all of the money (-$5,000) and leaves you with $0.

    Identity Property of Addition: You are at an auction house buying a vase and you bid $300 for it and then you are out-bid, so in the end you lose nothing and gain nothing.

    Identity Property of Multiplication: You receive five birthday present for your birthday party that have occurred once during two years, so you have only five presents in two years. (This example is when you only talk about two years)

    Multiplication Property of Zero: The game warden takes $5 from you for permission to hunt five deers in that one week. You search for some and get none because they all left your woods and overall you end up with zero dollar in that week.

      Identity Property of Addition: I think this works. Since your bid is removed from the auction after you're outbid, that would be 300 + (-300) = 0. Good example.

      The last example is more of adding zero (identity property of addition). You don't start with something and then lose it - that would be multiplying by zero.

    Inverse Property of Addition

    Jae had 500 riot point in his account. And then Jeremy hacked into Jae’s account and took 500 riot points. Now Kevin lost all his riot points.

    Commutative Property

    A rabbit had 5 carrots on the right side and 4 carrots on the left side. The rabbit didn’t like the way the order was in so he changed to order to 4 on the right side and 5 carrots on the left side but he still have the same amount.

    Identity Property of Addition

    Jeremy was had 6300 influence points to buy Syndra. He wanted to buy her, but he decided to keep the points for another character. So Jeremy has 6300 influence points.


    Identity Property of Multiplication

    Mr. Jobe had 20 gummy bears. He also had a genie and he wished to the genie that he wanted the gummy bears he had multiplied by one but after he looked at the gummy bears, he still had 20 gummy bears.

    Associative Property

    Mr. Jobe had 4 gum, 3 cookies, and 5 toys. He wanted to add up all of them but didn’t like the order he out it in which was (3+4)+5 so then he changed the order to 3+(4+5).



    Multiplication Property of Zero

    A bird had 5 worms but when he was pecking fro more worms, he found a magical worm and the worm said “if you don’t eat me, I will grant you a wish”. The bird didn’t eat him but when the bird said make my worms 5 times as more than I have right now. The worm said yes and said some words something when poof and he disappeared. When the bird got back home, he saw that his worms were all gone, then he realized that the magic worm had tricked him and freed all the other worms. So now the bird had zero worms to eat.

    1. You should not change the order in associative property. You numbers are correct, but your explanation is not.

      Great example with the multiplication property of zero and the worms! Nice story!

  7. Commutative Property
    KIS says to SIS, “Lets combine our schools.” So, SIS comes to our school and sticks their building to ours. However its too big so we say, “Lets stick our school to yours and see what happens!” We go and stick our school to theirs, but it is the same size. At the end we just stay apart.
    Associative Property
    Jeremy says to Patrick and Yoo bin. “Patrick and I will sit at the right side of the table, so Yoo bin, you should sit on the left side of the table.” Then, Yoo bin sits on the left side of the table. After a week, Jeremy tells Patrick, “Patrick, I want to sit on the left side with Yoo bin”. So, Jeremy and Yoo bin sit on the same side. However, at the end, they all sit on the same table.
    Inverse Property of Addition
    Jae gave Mr. Pie 15 cards yesterday. However, after Mr.Pie came back from a meeting, Jay Son had stolen 15 cards from him. So, Mr. Pie does not have any cards left.
    Identity Property of Addition
    Hannah promised Rachel that she would give her 2 elevator passes tomorrow, But, Hannah did not give Rachel the 2 elevator passes because she used it already.
    Identity Property of Multiplication
    Leo told Daniel that he would give Daniel 5 marbles for a week. However, Leo ran out of marbles, so Leo gave Daniel 5 marbles for a day.
    Multiplication Property of Zero
    Patrick went to the mall and found a cool jacket. He had 0 dollars in his wallet and he multiplied this money by 7 to try and get 7 dollars. However at the end he couldn’t multiply by zero and he had no cash.

  8. Commutative Property
    On the first week, Mr.Jobe visits the nail polish place on Monday and Tuesday, and the beauty salon on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. And the next week, Mr.Jobe goes to the beauty salon on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, and goes to the nail polish place on Thursday and Friday and both weeks his hair is curled and nail is polished glitter purple.

    Associative Property
    Mr Jobe has to buy three packs of Career special Edition Barbie dolls for himself. However, there is only packs of Doctor Barbie and Police Barbie together and one other Life Guard Barbie. So, he buys the Doctor and Police Barbie pack and one Life Guard Barbie. The next day, new Barbie packs had arrived, so he buys a Life Guard Barbie and Doctor Barbie, and one other Police Barbie. The outcome is same.

    Inverse Property of Addition
    Justin Bieber is going to a buffet. He eats 5 plates of roasted chicken, 3 cans of RedBull, 10 cones of ice cream and gets satisfied and goes home. However, since he ate so much RedBull, he goes home and pukes out all of them.

    Identity Property of Addition
    Mr.Jobe has 5 high heels and then he goes to the mall to buy more, but since he doesn’t have any money, so unfortunately goes back home and still has 5 high heels.

    Identity Property of Multiplication
    Mr.Jobe was cleaning his house, and he had realized that he had 24 nail polishes, so he decided to organize in to his new make-up box. He still has 24 nail polishes after he organized it.

    Multiplication Property of Zero
    There was seven apples that Mr.Jobe bought, and then one of the apples rotted. So, the other six apples rotted as well.

  9. Commutative Property

    There was a dog owner called Bob. Bob had 3 dogs: Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier, and a Golden Retriever. He liked Maltese the most, then the Yorkshire Terrier, then the Golden Retriever. Bob always gave the dogs doggy bones for lunch in the order that he likes. Therefore, the order has to be Maltese, then the Yorkshire Terrier, then the Golden Retriever. However, Maltese had to shower because he was so dirty, so Yorkshire Terrier got the bone first, then the Golden Retriever, then the Maltese. But, in result they all got a doggy bone.

    Identity Property of Addition

    Mrs. Jacobs and Mr. Jacobs has one daughter. They wanted another daughter, so they went to an orphanage to adopt another daughter. However, there were no daughters and only sons in the orphanage, so they couldn’t adopt a new daughter. They still have only one daughter.

    Multiplication Property of Zero

    A man named Rango was walking down the Sahara Desert. He ran out of water, so he was looking for an oasis. Then, he found an oasis! He used his last energy to run to the water. However, when he got there, all the water was dried up because of the heat, and there was no water left.

    Associative Property

    Florence had Poptart, Skittles, and Air Heads candy. She had 3 each. On the first day, she ate Poptart and Skittles. On the next day, she ate Skittles and Air Heads. The groupings changed, but he still ate all of them in 2 days!!!!!!

    Inverse Property of Addition

    One day, Brian was very happy because his mom was buying him a very large present. It was supposed to be a game disc. However when he tried to enter the disc in his Macbook it didn’t work. So in result he didn’t get anything that he could use.

    Identity Property of Multiplication

    There were 12 players on a baseball team. The team had a contract that there would be 12 kids added to the team every month. However due to money problems the team could not bring in any players and only lasted with their original 12 players.

      Associative property is a little incomplete. She should have eaten all the candies each day, but just grouped differently. Did she eat all of them each day? That was not specified.

    Commutative Property
    Example= Jack has to pay back Peter 5,000 Won in two days. It does not matter whether Jack pays Peter back 2,000 won on the first day and 3,000 won on the second day. It does not matter if Peter pays 3,000 won on the first day and 2,000 won on the second day he will still pay Peter back 5,000 won.

    Associative Property
    Example= Jack, Sam, and Peter decides to go to a trip to the amusement park. They find a maze, and decides to take a try. On the way of the maze they found 2 pathways that seems to lead to the exit, and decides to split up. Even if Jack and Sam goes together and Peter goes alone or if Sam and Peter go together and Jack goes alone there still will be 3 people who make it out of the maze

    Inverse Property of Addition
    Example= Mrs. Chung earns $60 for the hospital work. She is currently working in the hospital and has problem paying her tax. Currently for this month, she earned $60 and has to pay in total $60. Now she has no money in all.

    Identity Property of Addition
    Example= Jay needed another computer for gaming. He goes to the store, however is all sold out. He comes back to his house and comes back with one computer

    Identity Property of Multiplication
    Example= James want to buy 30 dolls in total. 1doll cost per $1. So he needs to pay $30 in total.

    Multiplication of Zero=
    Example= Bob goes to the hotdog store and needs $3 for 1 hotdog. He has no money, and receives 0 hotdogs in total.

      The multiplication of zero does not work. He never has anything to start with, so nothing gets multiplied by zero in this case.

  12. Commutative Property: Mr. Jobe feeds his Macbook 2 chocolate and 5 candies the first week and 5 chocolates and 2 candies the next week. The amount of sweets Mr. Jobe fed his Macbook are same for the two weeks.

    Associative Property: Mr.Jobe went on a vacation with his brothers Mr.Jabe, Mr.Jebe, Mr.Jibe, and Mr. Jube. At a hotel, the first day 2 brothers sleep in one room, and other two sleep in another room, which leaves Mr.Jobe alone. The next day, Mr.Jobe sleeps with two of his brothers, leaving Mr.Jube and Mr.Jebe each one room. However, the number of people still remains the same, 5 people.

    Inverse Property of of addition: Mr. Jobe write a long essay and then Ms. Lee comes and erases all the essay Mr. Jobe wrote so there is nothing left.

    Identity Property of Addition: Mr. Jobe got 600 presents on his birthday. The next day, Mr. Hopp comes and gives him 0 presents. As a result, Mr. Jobe has 600 presents.

    Identity Property of Multiplication-There were Mr. Jobe and his 9 brothers. They were trying to do a project. They grouped themselves into 5 groups of two. The next day, only Mr. Jobe’s group showed up. As the matter of fact, there were only 2 people to do the project.

    Multiplication Property of zero- Mr. Jobe, the great astronaut takes 100 camera's into the space. Suddenly the black hole appears and the cameras disappear into the black hole. As a result Mr. Jobe had no more cameras.

  13. Feeding chocolates to your MacBook? Very odd.

    Associative property usually works with group of three items, so it does not truly work here since one of the groupings never even changes.

    Ms. Lee erased my essay! I was wondering why I failed!

    Your identity property of multiplication example does not make sense. What is being multiplied by one?
